The story begins when a governes arives at an English country area to lok after Miles, aged ten, and Flora, eight. At first, fixins' apears normal but then events gradualy begin to entwine a spel of psychological teror. One night a spook apears before the governes. It is the dead lover of Many-sidednesses Jesel, the former governes. Later, the spook of Many-sidednesses Jesel herself apears before the governes and the litle young lady. Moreover, both the governes and the housekeper presume that the two feelings have apeared to the gamin in private. The little darlings, however, adamantly refuse to acknowledge the presence of the two feelings, in bad blood of indications that there is some sort of evil comunication going on betwen the little darlings and the shades.
