in another review about another georgette heyer book i wrote i would not go seek out her books again - i am glad i did though curtesy of a review in a blog. it was favourable reviewed there and although this was not a brilliantly sparkling and fluffy book - for want of a better word - it was a good solid novel. the premise: not romantic, his lordship does have to marry to keep his beloved estate thus forsaking his love to a pretty lovely poetry-loving beauty. tough. he won't get my pity. better to marry sensibly and knowing what you're letting yourself into - even in a non-romantic way - than being madly in love and then waking up some time later. decidedly unromantic but realistic. the "action": well, it basically chronicles the way to the marriage and then its first year. there were no notable climaxes or suspense points - if you know your history that is - but surely everyone knows that napoleon was beaten... a little climax when the thing with julia (that affected cow) fainted. good solid action. our hero has his problems too, he is unbelievably rich and has a wife whose only aim is to make him comfortable and a father-in-law who wants to bestow shedloads of money and presents on the couple... but this is bad. the riches come from a bad source (trade), a bad man (coarse and insufferably badly behaved), he has to put up with the incredible bad taste of the father-in-law and his wife is tiny with an unremarkable face. oh my. i do understand part of it. it's hard to receive presents and money you did not earn yourself if you're a proud person, granted. the characters: were mostly wooden papercut caricatures - in the best possible way. i never really warmed up to them but i did not feel that i needed to. it kind of recycles the jane-austenish-prototypes with the plucky young sister (lydia/margaret), the down-to-earth couple (eleanor and edward)... but again i don't really mind because in the end most characters in books (and to some extent real life) boil down to this. the layout: my edition was lovely. i liked the cover and the quality of the pring / binding. so, overall, i did enjoy it. the period details were convincing and the writing if a bit stiff at times well readable. i had to laugh out loud some times - i like that. and - if i come across one of georgette heyer's other regency romances i will most likely pick it up again.

a dupla Lars Kepler não desiludiu neste 2º livro! Adoro o detective Joona Linna. Muito bom! Recomendo.
