I don't even know where to start with this one. I must say that I am quite biased. I have a minor in German and love everything German history, film, books etc. Over the last few years, I haven't really read anything based in, from, about Germany. The Book Thief really pulled me back into my love of Germany and all of its history. I absolutely loved this book. It is told from the point of view of "Death" - which is pretty prominent in Nazi Germany. I thought it would take 1/2 the book to get me used to the writing style. But its written so well, that 20-30 pages in I completely lost myself in the book. And I believe even if you know nothing of German History, you will fall in love with these characters and their stories. I swear I could hear Liesel in my ear saying Papa, or Rosa saying "Saukrel". I fell in love with Rudy, Max, Hans and Liesel. Even Rosa had a special place in my heart. I laughed and cried throughout this book. When there was only 150 pages left, I was filled with dread that Liesel's story was coming to a close - but at the same time I couldn't slow down or put the book away. This book was everything: a love story, a horror story, a comedy, a tragedy. If it is not my all-time top favorite, then it is a close second. This is definitely one of those books that I will be purchasing, in hardback, to keep on my shelf for future reading. Thank you Markus Zusak for a story I will never forget!
