Bret Easton Ellis is doing a lot of interesting technical things in this book. His lists, his chapters dedicated to '80s music, his (now almost mythic) unreliable narrator. However, the books revels in its own gratuity; it may have worked better if it were half its current length. It also seems to be a kind of nihilistic satire; beyond commenting on how bleak society was in the 1980s, it doesn't seem to be doing much.

Go back and reread this book because it is still scary and still good.

Niet direct een boek wat ik zou aanbevelen. Het is interessant bij vlagen, maar gaat toch uiteindelijk over een aantal nerds, die al het mogelijke doen om hun vermogen tot onthouden op te voeren om er dan in het dagelijkse leven niets aan hebben. Ik wist nooit, dat er een heel wedstrijd circuit is waar deelnemers europees, amerilaans of wereldkampioen "herinneren" kunnen worden. De trucs, die ze gebruiken dateren uit de tijd, dat er nauwelijks boeken warn en dus de mogelijkheden om even iets op te zoeken ontbraken. dus richtte je dan een "memory palace" in je hoofd in om van alles en nog wat te onthouden. Wij zoeken dat even op op Google etc. Het is natuurlijk niet helemaal onzin: het kan geen kwaad als schoolkinderen een aantal zaken gewoon uit hun hoofd leren. En misschien zijn deze trucs dan wel handig. Het boek is wel erg levendig geschreven. De schrijver is journalist en heeft om dit boek te schrijven een jaarlang getraind en in dat jaar het amerikaanse kampioenschap gewonnen.

Little pig is so little that everyone in his family ignores him as they find instruments to play in a marching band. He eventually finds the best place to be- the leader! Cute, funny- short.
