Truth has many interpretations! Just as words have different meanings and the slightest change in inflection can alter their substance, the truth of what happened to this family of missionaries in the Congo changes with the perspective of each family member. Kingsolver brought the Congo to life in her descriptive lyrical telling. The story as told through the eyes of Orleanna, Rachel, Leah, Adah and Ruth May is striking in their differences in interpretation of the events that changed their lives and those they were there to help. Very thought provoking! I loved Adah's palindromes.

** spoiler alert ** I had some problems with this book. I liked the story line. I kept reading because I wanted to know whodunit. I liked the social commentary theme of being a popular girl or "plastic" (in other books). SPOILERS********************************************** Okay, what was up with that whole Scott thing? He is portrayed as this awesome, artistic, friendly guy. Then when he and Jane are on the picnic, he turns into a creepy stalker? And she drops him super fast. I thought they were friends? Nothing was ever mentioned again of him in the book. I felt like that whole story line just ended. Nothing resolved. It felt too fast for all the time that was spent on it in the book. There were other things that really bothered me, but that was the biggest.
