I never know what to expect with Anita Shreve. I either love her books or hate them. There’s no in between and I can’t identify any rhyme or reason for the different reactions. If I had to try to put my finger one, however, I think it would come down to the characters. I can get much more into her stories when I feel like the characters are realistic or like I can empathize with them. I’ve read other reviews for this book, and it appears most people are not fond of the characters. Oddly, I thought they were great. A number of people seemed to think they weren’t all that deeply developed. To me, this is one of the reasons I enjoyed the book. I thought that their feelings and thoughts were well portrayed, without the story being bogged down in unnecessary fluff. What other people see as well developed sometimes strikes me as overdone and grating. I don’t want an author to tell me how I should feel about what is going on; I want to take the story that is being presented, mull it over in my thoughts, and allow it align with those memories and emotions that it evokes in me personally.
