I think I would have enjoyed this book more had a read a hard copy rather than listening to it on CD. In this format, so much depends on the interpretation of the actor's interpretation and in this case I found the delivery rather flat so that after a while it became tedious to listen to. Having said that, I do usually enjoy novels by Isabel Allende and it is hard to say whether my luke-warm reaction to this one was because of the narration, or because the book itself was less enthralling than some of her others. The story is set on the island of Haiti, and in Louisiana and the main character is a slave who becomes the concubine of the French plantation owner. I did find the history of the island interesting and the description of the voodoo religion brought to the island by the slaves from Guinea. I wish I had liked the book better.
