Fun tidbit: when the Persians tried to invade Egypt, they nailed cats to their shields. Freaked out the Egyptian archers, who held cats sacred. And a great use for cats! But: I could barely keep awake in the wash of detail and brain-numbing prose.

there is just one reason why I gave the book 4 not 5 stars. SPOILERS!!! Through out the story you feel Bitterblue's interest interest in Saf and Giddon. To a point that to me it was like she really loved both, but was clear on her feelings for neither. She does eventually falls to an extent for Saf, and you know that she more than likes him, but not clear if she loves him. But is Giddon the one that to me evokes more a feeling of love. I would have loved to see where would that relationship would had gone given the opportunity. I hope there would be 4th book, and be form Giddon's perspective.
