A whole chain of events is set off by Mosquito’s tall tale, leading to the sun not rising. Lion has to call all the animals of the jungle to a meeting to get to the bottom of it. The rhythm and expressiveness of this retelling are excellent for reading out loud. Have students invent their own tales that explain something in nature. Perhaps tell other tales similar first then make one up as a class. Include this with a unit on other folktales or looking at African tales specifically. Map out the climb of action to the climax and the resolution of this story. Since the chain event of the action in this book build on each other this story would fit this visual aide perfectly. Cause and effect! Talk about cause and effect and graph it out on a graphic organizer. Focus on event words, then, next, first, last, etc. in a retelling of the story by students.
