Promising new fantasy series from Pat Wrede. Eff is a great female protaganist and the reader is introduced to her at a very young age. She is the 13th child born in her family which makes her unlucky but her twin is a 7th son of a 7th son, which makes him incredibly lucky. He uses his good standing to help her and protect her as they grow up, which is what the book is about. Eff, her brother and her magical family move to the edge of the frontier so their father can teach at a new school. The relationship between the twins throughout the book is very sweetbut truly the best part is watching Eff grow up. She must deal with being this idea of being the "unlucky" 13th child and being an outcast. Teens will find her character very easy to relate to. The book is never boring and the attention to details is brilliant.
