An interesting premise but the author threw too much alternate history/mythology at the reader with little-to-no explanation, leaving me pretty confused for a good portion of the book (was there a short story that explained more of the mythology/backstory that I missed somewhere? Another book entirely?). This just didn't feel like a first book in a series; it felt like there were one or two books that I'd missed that would've explained more about the Horde and nanotechnology before I got to this book. I also didn't expect it to be quite as romance novely as it was and was a little put off by that aspect. But the thing that bothered me the most were the descriptions of The Iron Duke, which mostly amounted to "He's a big, huge guy." It was a little too stereotypical in the first place but then the author just kept mentioning how large he was, what wide shoulders he had, etc. and it was a little much. The reader most likely hasn't forgotten that he's supposed to be some behemoth of a man; we don't need to be told every few pages or so. It was an okay book, but didn't leave me eager to read the rest of the series.
