I can see why this book is the groundbreaking novel for Young Adult Literature. It is amazing, and I've never read anything like it. Ponyboy lives in Oklahoma with his two older brothers: Darry and Sodapop (his parents died shortly before the story takes place). They all belong to a gang called "Greasers" and their rivals are the Socials (Socs). Ponyboy is a really bright kid. He gets good grades, he's on the track team . . . he's just not your typical gangster. When things start to heat up between the two gangs (more so than usual), things take a turn for the worst, when one of the gang's members, Johnny, accidentally kills a Soc in self-defense. Ponyboy who witnesses it, decides to run away with Johnny. There are some books that are plot driven and there are some books that are character driven. This one is character driven and that's what makes this book so amazing. The plot is great, but the thing the reader will appreciate most about the book is when they realize how much they care about these characters. How much they know about them. How much they connect with them and love them. This book will make you laugh and make you cry (I actually didn't cry . . . but I feel like I should have . . . you know what I mean?). It's amazing and It's a book I will have in my library and will make sure every single one of my kids reads it.
