In the far future of 1975, the US and Russia are racing to finish their atomic rockets to be the first to land on the moon. Just the first of many retrocities in the book that it's not really about, but may get a distracted giggle out of you. I think the most important thing a female character does in the whole thing is to faint. Feminist writing, this is not. The book kept my attention, but I found the overall conceit to be poorly motivated... why is this a, let alone the, natural next step? I do have to note, without mentioning them--I'm striving to maintain a spoiler-free review--that other writers in the same period were exploring very similar concepts, so maybe it was just the trendy topic of the time. All the same, I teared up a little at the end, tales of loneliness always do that to me.

It's a shame that this story felt so mechanical, because it is nice to see a female protagonist with a disability at the lead in a romance story. Unfortunately, it felt just too much like this was written to a template and the story didn't flow.
