I have been a devoted fan of Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series for over a year. And one of my favorite side characters has been Vlad Tepesh, the pyrokinetic vampire who inspired the Dracula myth. So it should come as no surprise that I was ecstatic to hear that Vlad would be getting his own spin-off series. One of the best parts of this book was getting to know more about Vlad. Frost has provided hints throughout the Night Huntress series, but now there are actual details. The one word that I would say describes Vlad is "survivor." His past is very tortured and his personality definitely reflects that. The arrogant and ruthless demeanor is a little jarring at first, but Vlad is so charming and protective that he quickly found a place in my heart. As for the heroine and narrator Leila, I was a little hesitant about her at first. Mostly this was because I was wondering how Frost was going to provide a character worthy of my beloved Vlad. Thankfully, my concerns were unfounded because I loved Leila! Her sassy personality never evolved into the dreaded feisty stereotype and I really sympathized with all the issues she had with the whole superpowers thing. A great part of her character was her ability to turn Vlad upside down with her sarcasm, strength, and no-nonsense attitude. She was definitely not a weeping damsel in distress which is what I think Vlad truly needed. There is a ton of action and suspense in this story, primarily concerning the mystery of who was trying to use Leila to get to Vlad. The setting of modern-day Romania was wonderful to read about especially with its relation to Vlad's character. I also enjoyed seeing the Night Huntress and Night Huntress World couples pop in at random times. Bones was especially fun to see with his bickering bromance with Vlad. I do wish Ian, the redheaded man-whore, could have appeared, but I'll just have to wait for the next Night Huntress book. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and look forward to seeing how Vlad and Leila's relationship develops in the aftermath of all the drama at the end. I'll say one thing...Vlad better watch out because Leila doesn't seem like she's fooling around anymore. For more of my reviews, please visit my blog.
