This book was great until the last 20 pages and the ending was TERRIBLE. The language was fascinating, the plot interesting, and then the author clearly ran out of steam. Very disappointing ending to an otherwise good work of literary fiction.

I re-read this book this weekend, I'm not sure why, since I'm already reading a bunch of other things. It's immensely readable, and I love it, so I suppose that helped me pick it up. However, I had forgotten the impact that it has on me. You could say it is the story of a literary friendship, shaped by reading and writing and teaching, but really it is just a love story between two friends-detailing the wrenching decisions and intricacies that those kinds of friendships can bring. I ended up sobbing on a bench outside my work on Monday, glad that I had chosen to reread this, but also totally heartbroken.

Why was a little girl left on the wharf in Australia with no one accompaning her, no note, and no one to meet her? This is the secret and mystery that both that grown little girl and her granddaughter try to solve. At first I was irritated by the skipping about in time and in characters from chapter to chapter in this novel. However, I began to realize this was the device the author used to slowly reveal the clues to the answer to the mystery and all the accompanying secrets. The clues had to come from different times and the experiences of different characters. As a reader I made some guesses about the answers to the secrets and then had to abandon them and make new ones or go back to original guesses further on. That requires the engagement of the reader. The fairy tales that are included give veiled hints to the answers to some of the secrets and are an interesting addition to the novel. This novel could give rise to good discussion in a book club. Even so, I wanted to say to "Nell", "You were raised by loving parents, but you don't know who your real parents are...So get over it already! Quit the drama".
