Liz Curtis Higgs is one of my favorite authors for Scottish historical fiction, and she does a fantastic job at blending history with, well, history! In this book, we meet two women, one a mother-in-law, the other a daughter-in-law. Both become the focal points for a story that Liz has crafted with brilliance as she tackles the Biblical story of Ruth. For those unfamiliar with Liz's books, she has a habit of using history as a place to draw forward more history. Her penchant for nailing Scottish brogue in prose, drawing readers into the time period with gusto, and using pivotal moments in history to make the Biblical story come to life always leaves me amazed and searching Scripture to see if her characters match up to the ones in the historical story. Overall, I love reading about the Ruth and Naomi counterparts in Liz's book. They both come alive in vivid color that leaves me amazed at the characterization. I almost expect them to walk around town speaking in the Gaelic or Scottish brogues that are liberally spread throughout conversations. In short, I loved the story.
