I'm always a bit anxious when I pick up a short story because let's be honest most of us have the prejudice that a short story can't have the depth and complexity of a full novel but Megan Hart did it again and showed me that even her shorter work will grab me on the first page and leave me with a smile on my face at the end. Kendell is a DEA agent and she finds herself on a "paradise" island. We all would squee with delight at such an opportunity but the reason for her stay deminishes her enthusiasm. Her partner got killed by one of her fellow agents and the "murderer" is also on this island to find a way to find a way to live with the situation they are both faced with. It doesn't help that Kendall is very attracted to Zane, even though he is the reason for all her current problems. The story itself sounds depressing and when I just look at it I would think "how convenient" and just shake my head. But while reading this story I was enthralled by the characters and their inner struggles. It always amazes me how much emotion can be found in one of Hart's novels. She has a way to make her characters so complex and 3 dimensional even in such a short format. Friendly Fire is a romantic and very emotional story but we also find some rather funny moments in it. It has exactly the humor I like, popculture innuendos that make me smile and all in all a very varied cast of sidecharacters. All in a bit over 50 pages. And let's not forget the romantic aspect. Kendall and Zane have a hard and rocky road before they finally get to each other but believe me it was worth every second. There was one scene that made me all goey inside and always made me giggle- I really loved it. Friendly Fire is funny, sexy and very emotional. It will show you about how deep and thoughtful a short story can be. Another keeper by Ms Hart- we all have to thank Carina Press for re-releasing this one. Highly recommended read for the short entertainment- it will leave you smiling and happy.

Glad I finished this one, even though around page 300 I was ready to put it down for good. Perhaps my expectations for this one were too high and that's why I don't feel more for it. But I liked it. The love between the two of them was what kept me reading.
