I read this book a long, long time ago, but loved it. It's a good gothic sort of love story. I need to read it again!

** spoiler alert ** Kino is a poor pearl diver with a wife and baby son to support. His family lives a simple, happy life until his son is bitten by a spider and becomes ill. They have no money for a doctor and need to find a large pearl to pay for treatment. He finds a very large pearl which should bring wealth, comfort, and security but things go wrong from the start. The pearl brings everything it is supposed to eliminate.

Totally left on the edge of my seat. What a ride. It's all I can do to not run out and get Ghost Story right now!
