I thought it was okay. The illustrations are charming, but Lowry's writing didn't excite me the way it usually does. None of the characters really grabbed me. I question how much the main character, Hildegarde, can appeal to children. From the get-go, Hildegarde is concerned with a level of responsibility and sense of duty well beyond a child's scope. Hildegarde knows her world well and has the solid judgment of a middle-aged person. Where's the fun in that? I would have preferred to experience events through the eyes of a greener character, someone who's learning about the mouse world at the same time as the reader does, preferably by making a few mistakes along the way. I agree with another Goodreads reviewer who said she'd have liked to see more action. I'd add that I want to be put into that action with the characters. I don't want the detached view of the one who hands out the instructions.
