The Graveyard Book is a truly captivating story that I thoroughly enjoyed reading and I feel middle school students would absolutely love and appreciate. This book by Neil Gaiman has so much to offer young teenagers; from the characters to the pictures illustrated throughout, it is a complete young adult novel. Bod is adopted by graveyard inhabitants and learns how to survive in unlikely circumstances among tombstones and ghosts. I think what makes this book so amazing is the balance between horror and wit. Through the character of Bod, a unique coming of age tale is portrayed, as students reading this book will see Bod grow from a baby to a teenager. I think this book is beneficial for young readers because it promotes reading and teaches life-lessons. I would have my middle school students read this book because I think it is so appropriately fitting for developing teenagers and will continue to hold their interest to the end.
