These essays were a joy to read, quite simply. H has a philisophical style the layers logic in an decidedly poetic way and for this reason mainly, you'll want to take your time. That, unless you have a very solid recollection of western philology spanning 40 years in either direction from 1900, and the time you'll need to make sidetrips to an encyclopedia (otherwise I can imagine you'd miss quite a bit -- even with my sidetrips I surely missed - who knows what). It's a boon for fans of Rilke and Nietzsche in particular. Put this in the category of "you get what you put in" -- but it's more of an alchemy than just that; lead into gold.

A very well written book. Again, it takes you to a life so different from what we know here in the states. Every female that has read this book loved it. Admittedly, even the handful of men that have read this book really enjoyed it as well. If you pick up this book, you will finish it for sure; particularly if you are a woman.
