I struggled to read Pilgrim at Tinker's Creek while living in a solitary cabin by a lake in Northern Minnesota. It didn't grab me, and I probably would never have picked up another Dillard book if a friend hadn't read excerpts to me from this book. Dillard's depictions of that strange twilight time of childhood when adulthood comes into focus just enough to scare a kid, then recedes for at least a little bit before coming back stronger and more insistently is spot on. What Waldorfians call the Nine Year Change is perfectly described. And I've never been able to think of S&H Green Stamps the same way after reading about Dillard's brilliant, funny, iconoclastic mama.
This is quickly becoming one of my favorite series!
