Neal Stephenson writes a good story, and does a great job of building an world. You just need to stay with it and get through the first 200 pages of the foundation laid by that world building to get to the meat of the plot, and from there it's vintage Stephenson. Some of the character development could have been more extensive, but given the scope of the tale, it's an understandable concession. To me, this book was more about the journey than about the resolution. The author tackles some hard core science fiction ideas and does so in a way that leaves you with a deeper understanding of the science behind the fiction.
