This was a fascinating time capsule of San Francisco as AIDS starts to rage. This was also the book where I really, really started to dislike Mary Ann.
I won this book on a goodreads giveaway and was thrilled to win for the first time. I was a bit disappointed in the book as a whole, though. I felt like the writing was a bit juvenile at times and that the story wanted to be bigger and greater than it really could be. I didn't like the emphasis on the sex lives of the main characters because it made the reader feel as if great sex was what made the characters soul mates. I was pleased to read of a few moments when they could be alone together and not have to get undressed, but in the end, it always went back to that. I thought it was belittling to the concept of soul mates. I was able to appreciate the idea of the couple being together for a greater purpose and also that other points of view were available on other characters, especially the principal. I am glad that instead of just casting him as the "bad guy" that the reader was able to get into his mind a bit to see where he was coming from. I also enjoyed the end going beyond the happily ever after and reading of miscarriage and hard times as the couple tries to make a life together. It gives a real life perspective of marriage that few books delve into. And I enjoyed that the male main character ended up telling his story through writing the novel currently being read. That made me smile a bit. Although there were some good points to the book, on the whole I did not feel like I came away from reading it having gained anything as a person. And I can't even say that I just enjoyed it on a escapist level. If I could go back I would not spend my time reading it.
