Alice Hoffman's novels are, in a word, hopeful. Married the wrong man? No problem, the right one is just an affair away. Drove off your only child? Redemption is just around the corner. A better life is always one decision removed. What makes it work, though, is that it's tinged with grief and sorrow. The characters don't always get exactly what they want -- or get it too late or after it's gone bad. Having stolen moments with your one true love is better than not finding him at all, I suppose, but then it causes everything else to fall apart around you. It never quite fits together the way it should. Probable Future fits this recurring theme nicely, with the requisite supernatural/magic elements and picturesque setting thrown in. Readable, but nothing too special.
