I saw the animated version of this story on an old TV series called Long Ago and Far Away, which was hosted by James Earl Jones. Abel was voiced by Tim Curry. It wasn't a very long segment, but I just fell in love with the story and the animation. I think William Steig must have done the artwork for it...? Anyway, when I found out there was a book, I was all over it. I loved how Abel was so resourceful, and how he reacted to his successes and failures, and how he dealt with his loneliness and despair.
