I loved Anna Karenina so much, that I decided to tackle War & Peace...and I have survived to tell you that the rumors are TRUE...this is a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong-ass book (yes, long-ass is a technical term among bibliophiles ;) ). I was reading it on my kindle, and it seemed like the page indicator would never move. I would read and read and read and read and read...and think surely he's wrapping this up THIS time...and realize that I was barely half-way through the book. And I'm a relatively fast reader! That being said...you get plenty of entertainment for your dollar. It's (of course) really well written--loves me some Tolstoy! His characters are alive, and the descriptions really bring them to life. He also has an amazing ability to make his story feel like real life--Tolstoy's universe is not a fairy-tale life, full of happy endings. His characters grow and change throughout the novel. They are human and falliable. And in this case they have plenty of opportunity to change A LOT. And they're all named Nicholas or Anna. But hey--you can't have everything. :) So...if you have a LOT of time...and plenty of patience...or, like me, a bus commute and a Kindle with free access to the classics (I can only imagine that the 'real' version weighs about 10 pds), this book will give you many hours of true amusement.
