I found my copy of The Catcher on a park bench when I was about 19. So began a youthful obsession with J D Salinger. I don't know if I would like this book now. I half think the main thing I liked then was Holden caulfield's affected slang.
I enjoyed this novel, which is clearer and less depressing than some of Murakami's other work. I also thought the English translation on this one, by Philip Gabriel, was better than the ones I have read translated by Jay Rubin; the dialogue is more idiomatic and the language in general is more natural.
Very insightful. An excellent read.
