I don't know what made me put this book on my "to-read" shelf in the first place. What review could've made me think I would like this? Sima takes the Jewish mother/wife stereotype to new heights. I think the author intended Sima to consider Timna as the daughter she never had, but I felt Sima's obsession with Timna exceeded a motherly interest. She seemed to be almost perversely in love with Timna. The scene on the basement steps (p. 256 in the hardback) was particularly troubling to me. And then there was Sima's treatment of her milquetoast husband Lev. She was so mean to him. All in all, not a book I would recommend.
