Reviews for this book are all over the place - in part, because many of Goldberg's readers hoped for a repeat of Bee Season, and in part, because The False Friend is not entirely successful. At age 30, Celia realizes one day that she was responsible for the death of her best friend in 5th grade. She returns home, hoping to convince others of the truth. They, however, have their own memories about what really happened. In order to move forward, Celia discovers that she has to come to terms with her past. While that particular realization is somewhat banal, Goldberg's recreation of the murky world of childhood's intense friendships, rivalries, and sheer cruelty is compelling.
