I picked up "Midnight's Children" simply because it's one of those books everyone refers back to, its important, etc... That being said, it is a literary wonder. The magical realism and descriptions of life/politics/growing up/history in India, Bombay, and Pakistan from the 50s to 70s. This is not a novel to read for fun. I described reading the novel to a friend like this: it's like two trucks filled with various fruits crashed into each other and you're looking at the wreckage. It's colorful, complex, there are squishy bits, smelly bits, pokey-sharp bits, metallic bits. Just a colorful mess. I would try to describe the plot, characters, point of the novel but I can't. No one character is ever fully fleshed out, there are random bits of fluff, there is not a linear timeline, and if you don't get magical realism, you'll be even more lost. Read this novel for literary reasons or if you find Marquez' style of magical realism to simple. Otherwise, read the synopsis on sparksnotes or something and save yourself some time and sanity.
