This book is considered a classic and a television series was produced from it in the 1970's. The book was written in the 1930's and is not an easy read (which so many people today seem to prefer). But it does place readers into the mind of Claudius and give sthem details of Roman society after the time of Augustus. The Roman Republic is long dead. Augustus (Octavian, great nephew of Julius Caesar) ruled as Emperor for many years. His wife, Livia, was his confidante and was very much involved in politics. So much so that she helped "steer" her choices into the Emperor's seat after the death of Augustus. Multiple members of the royal family either died, were exiled or executed. Tiberias became Emperor. Then the mad Caligula. When he was overthrown (and assassinated) by conspirators from the military, a new Emperor was sought. Someone who would rule as a figurehead while the real powers behind the throne dictated the empire. Claudius was selected because it was widely assumed that he was a bumbling idiot who limped his way around the Palace and stammered every time he spoke. But behind his physical disabilities was a sharp mind. And so his story begins...
