Childress tackles tough issues without preaching to his readers. His characters are human and believable, and his sharp wit made me laugh even as the plot of the novel made me wince. 'One Mississippi' takes place in the 1970's in (guess where?) Mississippi. Daniel and his family are 'Yankee' transplants from Illinois, and Daniel finds himself quickly becoming friends with Tim. An accident early in the novel sets off, not a chain, but a web of events which lead Daniel, his family, and his friends in unexpected directions. I found the ending a bit anachronistic - it seemed a bit ahead of the 1970s. However, if the novel were set in the present day, the story might seem less original and comparisons to real life events would be impossible to avoid. I'd be interested to hear from other people who have (or will) read it to see if anyone agrees.
