Armistead Maupin has a real gift of writing about characters so intimately its hard to believe they're not actual people. As the Tales of The City saga goes on this gift grows in to sharper and sharper focus. This particular novel doesn't sacrifice plot for character, however. Its story reminded me fondly of the early books with its surprises and shocks--not to the same extremes as before but perhaps with more resonance. Its deft approach to big topics like aging, sexuality, death and the never-ending human search for connections is sentimental without being cloying, humorous without being corny and serious without being mawkish. In short, it does not disappoint.
4.5 stars! Boy'o'Boy! She really upped the ante on this one! Amon got more tragic, Han got hotter! Dancer and (view spoiler)! And I can't help feeling like (view spoiler). I can't review Fantasy books, so I'm sorry but that's all you get. I'll be reading the third book veerrrrry soon.
