I have been in somewhat of a reading slump lately, but this book knocked me out of it. It's aimed at YA readers, so the writing is a little simplistic, but what a story! Poor Adeline - to be so completely unloved and unwanted. Fortunately she didn't wallow in self-pity, although she did have moments of depression and self-doubt. She managed to become successful and productive despite having very little support from her family. Aside from her grandfather Ye Ye and her Aunt Baba, her family was thoroughly unlikeable. Her step-mother Niang should rot in Hell.

Read this as it was one of the guardian list books, carried on reading it as it's a fascinating account of a young black woman's life in the 40's and 50's.
