Note: I have tried not to include anything remotely spoilerish in this review (at least until Lilyanne gets to read it), but if you don't want to know a thing about Deathly Hallows, DO NOT continue. This was a bittersweet journey to take, because I knew that it would be my last first time reading a Harry Potter book. There's really something magical about reading a book for the first time. I will miss that. Nevertheless, J.K. Rowling did not disappoint me (except for one scene, you can email me if you want to discuss it). Deathly Hallows bears the markings of war, which Harry is in the thick of: intense action scenes, multiple deaths, etc. etc. I'm in the midst of re-reading because this is a complicated book. I want to get everything I can out of it! Taking a peek at the message boards for the book, I notice that many people on goodreads, like me, have compared this book to LOTR. There are many quite obvious similarities, as well as influences from a pretty wide variety of sources (mythology, Bible, etc.), which you'll see when/if you read DH. While DH isn't my favorite of the series (I like GoF and CoS), it comes close. If you've read HP1-6 (or at least 4-6), I wholeheartedly recommend DH (it's a little complicated to understand otherwise).

The second quarter lost me so much that I never made it to the third.

For some reason, I held off on reading this one for a while; I think the flap copy had me convinced there was going to be a major division between Holmes and Mary, for real this time, and I couldn't bear the thought of it. Happily, I overcame my fears and this turned out to be one of my favorite Mary Russell novels since A Monstrous Regiment of Women. The main plot threads took some time to get going and I didn't realize until nearly the end that it's a Big Freaking Cliffhanger, but I liked the focus on Holmes' past and Mary's interactions with Mycroft.
