All previous Eugenides experiences were tied to Sophia Coppola's film adaptation of Eugenides' The Virgin Suicides, and so Middlesex was a necessary experience; at times a frank and often poetic multi-generational look at intersexuality. Particularly admirable and engrossing are the recursive imageries -- umbilical cords and the yarn unspooling from passing ships, the familial resemblances, the transformative silkworms and their mulberry trees. Part of me longed to know more about the interstitial period between the (now-grown) omniscient narrator and the nymph-child Calliope who calls the bulk of Middlesex home. I was pleasantly suprised that I did not think about anything Matthew Barney related during the entire read, and I'm thankful for it.
