This book reminds me why I love young adult fiction. This book features a wonderful, sympathetic yet believable narrator who learns some important lessons about building and maintaining relationships with others. I think Hilmo has captured beautifully the time and place of the novel and while the themes have been treated often in other books, Hilmo's main character (Ollie) is so well-drawn that it's like seeing these familiar things fresh through her young, naive eyes. The book has enough of a coming-of-age feel that I think it's better suited to middle school readers rather than high-schoolers, but all ages can find something to like here.
