The stories are really dated, socially and scientifically. The ones that were used in the movie, not as much. I really loved the movie. I saw it right after it came out. 'The Veldt', one of the stories in the movie, should be subtitled 'The Bad Seeds' (grin). 'The Long Rains' was set on Venus, I still think about them walking in that rain to this day,when it rains hard here. Of course, we now know it doesn't rain much on Venus. 'The last Night of the World' was very short in the book and it seemed to me that it didn't really suggest that they euthanized their children. Remember in the movie 'On the Beach' that the couple was supposed to give the pill to their baby, so it wouldn't survive them? Most of the stories in the book had ...umm.. less than positive outcomes.
