A fictional account of Sir Winston Churchill's lifelong struggle with depression. Churchill's depression is "personified" ("doggified"?)by Black Pat, a walking, talking, 8 foot tall behemoth of a dog. The tale takes place around the time of Churchill's retirement from Parliament in July of 1964, and also involves a House of Commons librarian, Esther, who has her own struggles with depression after the suicide of her husband. How the two protagonists deal with Black Pat is the real theme of the book, throughout which Churchill's admonishment to "never consent to the descent", describes how both he and Esther cope.
