This is, to me, Patricia Biggs' best Mercy Thompson story. The pace was tight, the plot was simple, while the resolution was complex. There were some very nice emotional points in here, that rang true to the characters. I also liked that there weren't a lot of extraneous complications from any of the sub characters in this series. Just Mercy and Adam dealing with a problem. *spoiler alert* The only thing I would have liked to have seen added, just for scary color, was some benign interaction between Mercy and the Otterkin when they were in human form. The reveal about their human form at the end would have worked even better. As it stands, the book is still great, that would have just been some extra flavor.
