There were times I didn't think I'd be able to finish this massive thing, and times when I got so tired of the unending wretchedness of the main character's life that I just thought I was not going to slog through any more of it. For long stretches of the book, there was nobody to like in it. But it eventually redeemed itself. It's a harrowing journey but with a very positive ending. I hope that the people I know in real life who are up against terrible odds end up doing this well in the end.
