*spoiler alert* This is a story about disenchantment, loss of innocence, fall of dream and destiny. It's slow paced, and the author has focused a lot on seemingly insignificant details, which later prove that they are all cardinal bits and pieces for bringing out the central message of the story. It broke my heart when I was reading the last sentence, knowing that Kathy, like all other Hailsham students and clones from other places, had no chance to escape from their destiny, and realizing that there is no turning back for our world. I am impressed by how Ishiguro has written a "sci-fi" from this romantic and sentimental angle, and how he has suceeded in bringing out that scientific and moral aspects of the story in a subtle way, without disturbing the picturesqueness of the novel. Overall I think it's a great and unique fiction. I haven't watched the movie version yet but I hope that it would be as good as the book.
A fast read and very relevant.
