A winning Ken Follett combination of historical setting (The thousand page book begins with the eve of WWI and spans until just after), fast paced engaging story, intertwining plot lines, and a balance of good and evil characters. I think Follett does a better job than usual of making the charcters multifaceted, rather than one-sidedly good or purely evil.
