This is a painful book to read for anyone who has lost a loved one as it is basically a memoir of the year after the death of the author's husband, but it is so beautifully written, with Didion's wit throughout, that it's worth it. It also made me realize that while it's horrible to lose a parent or friend, losing a spouse after years of marriage is so much more life shattering. This will make you wish you had met John and Joan and had dinner with them.
I didn't like this quite as much as his first book. He repeated himself a little too much and the entire section about Politics and his involvements was just not interesting to me and it was the largest section by far. I do think his awareness and foundation work for Parkinson's disease is worthwhile and the fact that he's willingly given his face to a relatively unknown disease. As in his first book, there's a bit of swearing that might bother some.
