I'm starting to re-read the Hornblower books chronologically following his life (as opposed to the order they were written) for perhaps the third time, and this is the first title. It's a pretty decent introduction to the personal and professional development of our hero, starting with his first voyage and carrying him through his appointment as acting-lieutenant. Its episodic nature made it less interesting than most later books, but it serves its purpose fairly well. Re-read, 8/15
