Really fun little book about pretend-driving to school, avoiding obstacles like a real car. Pictures are textured/collage style, but with a retro-twist. They look a little like something you would have seen in the "Little Engine that Could" era of children's books. The ending of the book isn't entirely satisfying, but I think that it could work just fine for younger kids, especially since the text is short and full of onomatopoeia.
Very untidy narrative. My credibility would have to have been stretched a long way to become immersed in the story. My partner (he's from Belfast) was amused when I told him about the heroine's contact with the Provincial (sic) IRA. (Must be culchies).
It took me a minute to get into it, but was worth sticking with it. The writing is beautiful, and I loved the folklore feel of the grandfather's stories.
