High tragedy with a cast of detailed, believable characters, all of whom you want to love despite the fact that they keep killing each other. This is technically fantasy, with some sword-and-sorcery elements (heavy on the sword, though). I've never liked adult fantasy much, but either I've changed or this is just a total standout from the genre (my money's on the latter). I recommend this to anyone who likes good characterization and masterful plotting, but who doesn't mind the fact that it's a quartet of GIGANTIC books, all clocking in around 900 pages (in the hardback editions). Keep this in mind, because once you've started, YOU WILL NOT WANT TO STOP.
