This is the first book of the Belgariad/Malleoreon series of David Eddings that I read as a kid. I remember liking it, and the social commentary stuck with me: Polgara, who was the master of a small country type place, banned slavery and instituted democratic reforms. In a fantasy book. Quite interesting, really.

Beautifully written! And to think she wrote and published this book at age 70+.

Very romantic tale, but still full of mystery and intrigue.

Bizzarre !.....a string of child murders in Stalinist Russia...and the state refuses to accept existence of crime in a obviously law abiding populace....until comes along a plot straight out of a Bollywood movie...two brothers separated at birth...one turns cop...other murderer :) ...oh what the hell...its still a gripping read !
