My German friend Leonhard argues that I cannot fully appreciate Rilke without speaking German. I guess he's sort of right--afterall, I think he can't fully appreciate Shakespeare in translation. Hmm. I will say, though, that my feeble brain did quite enjoy what Leonhard believed to be but a shadow of Rilke's actual masterpiece.
